El Thob

The main piece of dress of the Qatari attire, consist of one piece that consists of several pieces sawn together, usually we go to a tailor to get the exact fit.

Note the Qatari thob has a special fold in the middle matching with the buttons of the chest.

There are two styles for the hands buttons:

  1. Haddad: which means no buttons, open hands, free to move.
  2. Zirar: have two types:
  3. Fixed: usually same colour as the thobe, but sometimes different.
  4. Changeable: usually golden or silver and comes with a set including pen, handcuffs, key chains.

There is a chest pocket, usually to the left side, the corners and stitching varies depending on design and tailor. Sometimes there is a special pen compartment designed with it.

The back side of the thobe has got two opposite folds compared to the front. Which folds to the outside.

The coler: the neck piece has got so many designs and preferences, some are very short, some are quite long, usually supported by an inner piece of cartoon to keep it in place. Triangular, squared, rounded edges comes in different variations.

There is a set of pockets for each side of the thobe, sometimes we hve an inner pocket inside it to keep the telephone from scratching with keys or other materials we put inside.

Thobe comes on different colors depending on the season:

Summer: white/yellow colors: usually very light weight and texture

Winter: Darker colors, example: black, navy, brown,  etc. there are variety of it that comes with golden thread which makes it very attractive in texture.

In the old days Qataris played football while wearing the thobe, there is a special rule that is outside FIFA rules only local to us called : Foul Thobe, happens when the ball hits the thob and it is stopped by it unfairly, big guys would run to you, then on purpose open the legs so you can’t go anywhere. To avoid this rule, Qataris usually tie the thobe in the middle similar to the way they tie “Al Wizar”.
